Privacy Policy
Last updated: 22 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information Gay Australia collects, how we use it and what choices you have. We aim to handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles where they apply.
What we collect
- Account details: username, email address and password (stored in protected form).
- Profile content: the text, photos, age, city and preferences you choose to add, including what you are looking for.
- Activity on the site: messages you send, favourites you save and profiles you view or react to.
- Technical information: IP address, browser and device type, pages visited and cookies.
- Anything you send us through the contact form.
Sensitive information
A profile on a gay dating site can reveal your sexual orientation, which is treated as sensitive information under Australian privacy law. We only hold it because you choose to share it in your profile, and we use it only to run the site. You decide what goes into your profile, so leave out anything you do not want others to see.
What is public
Your published profile (photo, name or nickname, age, city and description) can be seen by visitors to the site and may appear in search engines. Private messages are not public. Please do not include details in your profile that you would not want strangers to see.
How we use your information
- to create and run your account and show your profile;
- to deliver messages and notifications;
- to review profiles and enforce our Terms;
- to prevent spam, fraud and misuse;
- to understand how the site is used and improve it;
- to reply to you and meet our legal obligations.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run the site (for example hosting, email delivery, analytics and payment processing for Premium), with authorities when the law requires it or to protect someone's safety, and with other members as part of your public profile. Some providers may be located outside Australia, so your information may be processed overseas.
Cookies and analytics
We use cookies to keep you logged in, remember your settings and understand how the site is used. You can block cookies in your browser, but some features may stop working.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, misuse and unauthorised access. No online service is completely secure, so please choose a strong password and do not share it.
Keeping and deleting your information
We keep your information while your profile is active and for as long as needed for legal and security reasons. To have your profile and account deleted, contact us through the contact form. Some information may remain in backups or logs for a limited time.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by using our contact form. If you are not happy with how we handle a request or a complaint, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
People under 18
Gay Australia is for adults only. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we will delete it.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
